About GIS Case Analysis
Hi, I’m Mike Young. GIS Case Analysis works with criminal-defense attorneys and investigators nationwide. It is an independent GIS consulting service built on my background in IT, business analysis, project management, and Geographic Information Systems (GIS).
I focus on criminal defense because careful analysis of location, timing, and movement evidence can materially affect how a case is understood. My role is to help attorneys examine that evidence clearly, objectively, and visually, and to create analysis and exhibits that can be communicated intuitively to others.
GIS Case Analysis reflects my strong belief that pattern recognition is one of the most important skills we bring to evidence analysis and mapping in criminal defense cases.
I take on a limited number of cases so each matter receives focused, hands-on attention from initial review through final deliverables.
Analytical Background
My background in GIS has centered on organizing complex information, defining requirements, and turning scattered data into structured analysis. I spent two years with the North Carolina Department of Transportation as an Analyst on a major Esri-based project, focused on requirements and business analysis.
That experience carries directly into criminal case review, where location, timing, surveillance, transaction, and other evidence may be spread across multiple sources. My role is to organize those sources, identify the spatial and temporal relationships that matter, document assumptions, and present the results through clear analysis and visual exhibits.
Methodology and Analytical Standards
My analysis is based on the available source data and is documented with clear assumptions, methods, and limitations. I distinguish between what the evidence establishes, what it suggests, and what cannot be determined from the available information. This approach is intended to make the analysis transparent, reproducible, and easier to evaluate.
Courtroom and Case Support
I prepare GIS analysis and exhibits with clear documentation of source data, methodology, assumptions, and limitations so the work can be reviewed and evaluated by counsel. I am available to discuss findings with the defense team and, when appropriate, to support deposition or testimony related to the GIS analysis and exhibits I prepare.
